Join us in Montbello for another pop-up traffic calming demonstration!
You're invited to join us on Saturday, June 15 at Silverman Park in Montbello to experience a community-led Vision Zero traffic calming demonstration!
After the success of our pop-up traffic calming demonstration on Federal Blvd, WalkDenver is helping communities all over the city plan similar events in their neighborhoods as part of the Vision Zero Community Program. A partnership with the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment and Denver Public Works, the Vision Zero Community Program is providing technical assistance and funding for seven projects this year aimed at raising awareness about traffic safety and Vision Zero in Denver.
Residents and community organizers in Montbello wanted to demonstrate potential safety improvements to the intersection outside of Silverman Park so that all residents have safe and healthy options for accessing the park. Montbello Walks, Montbello 20/20, Councilwoman Stacie Gilmore, and WalkDenver have teamed up to organize a pop-up event that uses low-cost materials like colorfully painted tires and spotted beach balls to temporarily display a safer street. Pop-ups can demonstrate elements such as crosswalks, curb extensions, landscaping, and artwork to show how easy it is to make changes to the street that would make the neighborhood safer and more inviting for people to walk, bike, and take transit.
This event is just one example of tactical urbanism where advocates, artists, community residents and city leaders use quicker on-the ground improvements to set a vision for longer-term safety changes that align with the Vision Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. While road diets and major redesigns might be the best solution for many cities’ most deadly roads, tactical urbanism is another promising example of how everyday items like tires, beach balls, hay, paint, chalk and creative signs can influence awareness and engage the community at large via low effort, low cost actions.
